artist statement
I am a dance artist and movement-based performer who works across disciplines of modern dance, theater, and performance art. I am deeply invested in works that remind us of our shared humanity—of how we are inextricably tethered to one another across time and space—and works that mine the depths of grief, joy, pain and pleasure.
Over the past eight years as a freelance artist collaborating with and learning from various choreographers, performers and practitioners, I have come to understand dance performance as both an offering and a form of collective witnessing. Through live performance, dance artists can manipulate time, eliciting emotion through an innate, embodied language that communicates beyond words. My experience as a performer has been dramatically shaped by the pandemic, the rise of global sociopolitical movements, and an increased awareness of the impact of climate change. Dance performance is, and has always been, a potent site through which we can process the collective grief of our time. Dance reminds us of life’s fragility, of what’s at stake, the immediacy of risk and reward, and the humor that can be found in its midst.
I believe that technical form can create a container in which the spirit can thrive and be made visible. I am interested in interrogating how I can bring my lived experience as a Black woman, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and an artist, into conversation with technical form, without obscuring the qualities and aesthetics that were born out of the many identities and studied practices that I carry with me.
By working through vulnerability as a performer and seeking deeper connection with myself and others, I continue to explore the limits of what my body and voice can express. As I hone my movement practice, I endeavor to expand the full range of my artistic expression with other tools, including song, spoken word, and choreography.
